How to Register a New Domain Name

Registering a domain name is seen by many newcomers to the web as a duty, really very technically complicated that the average mortal can not do.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

You only need bits of information on hand when you register your domain name:

- What are you going to call this domain

- And your web hosting control values, it is giving to you by your hosting company and looks like:
NS1.WEBSITEWELCOM.COM and
NS2.WEBSITEWELCOME.COM

They are almost always given to you in a partner.

So first go to a reputable domain name registrar.
I recommend either using www.Better-Domain-Names.com or www.Godaddy.com

This may not be the cheapest registrars currently on the web but their service, and exceptional reliability. I usually work on the principle “you get what you pay for”, and never a truer thing can be said about the domain name registrars.

OK, let’s walk through the process of domain name registration:

Using your web browser, visit a domain registrar. Usually on the front page there is a search option to check whether the domain name you want is available.

Say for example, that you are trying to register a domain name for your website Dog Training.

So you type dogtraining.com press enter, and it comes back that the domain is already taken.
Now, I would suggest that you put the prefix and suffix or words for your domain name after.
So you can try:

betterdogtraining.com
bestdogtraining.com
dogtrainingnewsletter.com
dogtraininganswers.com

You could also try placing a dash “-” in your domain name to separate words.
Indeed, there is a group of search engine optimization that is currently believed that search engines are now starting to penalize sites with a ‘strip’ in it.
Another thing, the site does not contain dashes and do not have numbers in it, generally the seller for a higher price.
So if you think you might sell your domain in the future, then it may be advisable to avoid using both lines and numbers.

Say, that you find dogtraininganswers.com available.
So you move to the next page. Generally this is asking you for details of the person who will become the owner of this domain. Generally this will be your name, address, telephone number etc.

Then the system will prompt you for how long you want to register your domain, the minimum period is 1 year and maximum I saw was 10 years old. Most people go for a period of one year, simply because it costs the least.
On the screen the better-Domain-names.com and Godaddy.com page, you will see a link that says:
“If hosting your site elsewhere, please click here to set the name server”

Please set your name servers now (using the server name given to you by your hosting company), otherwise if you have to go back and change the default name server at a later date. the problem is that it generally takes a long time for the server names to spread around the net and you can wait a few days this happened. But if you set them up now, they should deploy in a few minutes, maybe half an hour at most.

After you type a * good * server name value, you then move to the payment screen where you key in your credit card details.

Here you can see an option called “Auto Renew”. Check this box!
This allows you to automatically update the domain when the term ends. Every domain name registrant must either send a few emails before the domain is set to expire, and if you do not take action on this email, then the domain will get automatically renewed.
If you do not set this “Automatically update” option, then the system will let the domain lapse and it became available for some others to buy.

After you press the “submit” button, it will take only a few seconds to a new domain name to be yours.
